WATCH: The Architect Who Designed Epstein's Island Reveals the Truth Behind 'the Temple'
Robert Couturier is a famous French architect and designer who was hired by Epstein to design his infamous island in the US Virgin Islands.
“I've known Jeffrey since 1986/1987,” Couturier told me with a slow, elegant French accent, before going on to claim that “everybody knew what Epstein was doing” and that some of his accusers had “sold their souls to the devil”.
Couturier is best known for designing and decorating the abodes of famous faces.
A graduate of the École Camondo in Paris, he moved to New York in 1981. Six years later, Sir James Goldsmith commissioned him to re-conceptualize his 30,000-acre nature reserve on the Pacific Coast of Mexico. Couturier went on to decorate Goldsmith’s Boeing 757, his double-width Manhattan townhouse, and his historic French chateau.
He has worked with the likes of Anne Hearst, Frederick Iseman, and was included in Elle Decor’s “A-list Top 60 Designers”, while the British magazine House and Garden named him one of the top 10 foreign decorators.
But it is his past work for Jeffrey Epstein that has become the focus of recent intrigue.
He wasn’t the only architect hired by Epstein to oversee the designs and renovations of his many luxurious properties. Another Frenchman, Alberto Pinto, was the most involved in the development of Epstein’s homes and island.
But Couturier helped to design one of the most infamous structures on Epstein’s island - a square, blue and white striped building crowned with a golden dome.
The building, standing at odds with the rest of the island’s infrastructure, has been the subject of many a rumour and conspiracy theory for over a decade.
It is now known around the world simply as ‘the Temple’.
But Couturier, whose name appears in the recently released Epstein files, insists that this name doesn’t match the mysterious feature’s true purpose.
In the below video, available to paid subscribers, Couturier tells me how he met Epstein, his visits to the island, the truth behind ‘the Temple’, and the day he sat beside Epstein and told him, “I can’t work for you anymore. I just can’t.”
